Sorry everyone for spamming this like 4 different times! I’m bad at this kind of thing and @QOrigins helpfully suggested reposting so the article was visible- so you can blame them for this one!

(This will be the last time though I swear)

Dropping links to the podcast to make it easier for the platforms to find them. And if you’re bored and feel so inclined, maybe report the show directly or leave a review

I’ve sent an @ApplePodcasts press contact 3 emails in the last 2 weeks. Crickets.

Shoutout to @stuartathompson for covering this. Hopefully platforms will take note now!

Questions all podcast platforms should have answers for (imo)

[tweet] [link]
This persons not wrong but they’re missing a bit of nuance.

Sure, functionally, podcast apps are just RSS aggregators, but if that’s all they were, we wouldn’t be having this discussion.

But it’s 2022 and everything has to have an algorithm driven recommendation component! >>

[tweet] [link]
This is where the potential for bad comes in. For example, here’s a screenshot of my Apple Podcasts. I have never searched for or listened to either of these podcasts (sorry @jaredlholt!)

And yet here they are, because I’ve listened to similar pods >>

[tweet] [link]
It’s not just Apple Podcasts either, Spotify, Google, etc so the same thing with recommendations. Once we all understand this is only partially about the content and primarily about the recommendations, we can start having the convos we had years ago regarding YouTube, etc

[tweet] [link]
We’ve know for a while that “check this out because your history said you liked that other thing” can easily turn into an extremism/anti-vax etc pipeline.

So yeah, podcasts apps are just rss aggregators and YouTube is just a video player

…with recommendations!

[tweet] [link]
The other slightly less important feature both podcast apps and YouTube have in common is search. If all it takes is two taps and a quick search before I’m presented with extremist content, the barrier to entry is too low.

[tweet] [link]
So what can we do? Well the answer is still deplatform.

Pods with known violent/extremist/disinfo content should not be available through search and not recommended through algorithms. Creators should not get access to the platforms tools so they can check metrics etc

[tweet] [link]
People who want access to that content can still intentionally search it out and should be able to add it to whatever podcast app they like using. Just like someone that wants to see a video that was banned from YouTube van search it out.

It’s that simple

[tweet] [link]
By removing this content from recommendations, we’re going to make it a little bit tougher for someone to spend 8 hours listening to 9 different pods that are spewing election fraud disinfo. Or antivax disinfo. Or violent content.

[tweet] [link]
Like YouTube, the volume of content that’s uploaded to the platform is too great to allow for individual vetting of every video, so platforms should make sure they have a robust community reporting feature in place, and make sure they act on reports in a timely manner

[tweet] [link]
Unlike YouTube - and because podcast files are typically hosted off the platform - I don’t think we’ll have a good way (for a while at least) to use ML or automated tooling to proactively vet the content, so community moderation is even more important with pods

[tweet] [link]
Thanks for coming to my TED talk, I just fixed podcasts! Now @ApplePodcasts will you please for the love of god take your job seriously and remove this damn podcast

[tweet] [link]
Oh yeah, when I said “bad” here, I meant, “this is where the bad can happen”, not “these pods are bad”.

I’ve heard great things and have been planning to listen to both, which of course apple accurately predicted (and that’s kinda my point!)
